Race Replica 550 Four
Replica of a 1960s Honda four racing machine; GS550 based in this case.
UK registered in 2003 on a correct age-related “S” plate, this 1978 GS550 has had all the work commonly done to transform it into a ’60s Honda race replica. The Suzuki twin double overhead cam engine and frame layout is popular for the ’60s Honda look with a race fairing wrapped around it, and in this case the builder had even badged it “Honda” on the engine. The frame has been de-lugged, expensive and exotic drum brakes added at the front, nice alloy wheels newly built, looky-likey conversions to other parts and generally a lot of time and money spent to create something that, with further work, could become an excellent parade bike or even a classic track-day bike. We haven’t attempted to start it but the electric starter has been left in place and there isn’t much you can do to spoil a GS550 engine so it should all be good. The reason it’s such good value is that we don’t have the time to look at it in the workshop and if we did start it the noise (there are exhaust baffles but not fitted) from the straight through megaphone exhausts would upset a few of our neighbours, so it’s being sold as a project. The other thing to note is that it will require some work to make it run and to make it nice. The fuel tank is fibreglass and will require repairing or replacing and the standard of assembly is not high in some areas; fairing mountings for example. Have fun!
